Tokyo – Nagano: approx 4hrs by car

**Itinerary**
DAY 1 (Friday evening)
Tokyo to Nagano by car (can take a train to Matsumoto).
STAY (1 night): Guesthouse Tomoshibi
¥7,140 PER ROOM. Available to book on booking.com.
Very convenient location. Car park was right opposite (can easily access taxi / bus to either Kamikochi or Nakanoyu trailhead – taxi is approx ¥4,300). Quite simple but clean enough. Walls were not sound proof so expect to be woken by early rising hikers at 4/4.30AM.
DAY 2 (hike day)
Route: Taxi (¥4,000+) to shin Nakanoyu hotel trailhead (car park fills fast with hikers starting at 4am so consider taking a taxi) to Kamikochi bus terminal.
- Distance: 12km
- Height: 2455m (elevation gain approx. 900m)
- Time: 2.5-3.5hrs up depending on fitness. 2.5-3hrs down.
- Difficulty: 3/5Taxi out fo Kamikochi to pick up car and drive to Okuhida onsen area (other areas to consider staying and exploring include Norikura onsen town / Hirayu onsen town / Takayama / Kamikochi (hotels tend to be a little more expensive).
STAY (1 night): Nakashimakan

Very nice family bed and breakfast / Japanese inn feeling:
- Shared toilet (M/F separate)
- Small and simple indoor onsen and shower
- Outdoor onsen mountain and forest views (women side) across the road from the building (behind inn car park)
- Regular half board is great value for money (filling dinner with miso hide beef, sashimi, grilled fish, chawamushi etc.)
DAY 3 – Shinhotaka ropeway (can also hike) – drive back to Tokyo (Sundays – expect bad traffic in late afternoon).
